Note On “Jesus, I Am Resting”

Many hymns were written in response to the spiritual trial of sickness, death and persecution. According to http://www.semicolonblog.com/?p=6004, ”Jesus, I Am Resting” was  China missionary Hudson Taylor’s favorite, and it gave him comfort in troubled times.

“‘Having returned to England in ill health, he was brought to the very doors of death by the terrible news of the disruption of the work and the murder of hundreds of missionaries, as well as hundreds of native Christians, in connection with the Boxer uprising of 1900. Anguish of heart was killing him. Yet he believed that this baptism of blood would, under God, work out to the furtherance of the gospel.’

As J. Hudson Taylor was taking comfort in the words of Ms. Pigott’s hymn, Jean Sophia Pigott’s brother, Thomas Wellesley Pigott, a missionary in China, was martyred during the Boxer Rebellion.”

Today, though almost forgotten, this hymn still comforts God’s people in their battle against Satan in life’s grace-filled journey in Christ.

Lent Begins On Wed, March 9th

2011 Lenten Season occurs about as late as it can possibly occur. As our observation of Lent and Easter follows the Jewish Lunar Calendar for Passover, there is a 28 day spread in the date for Lent and Easter. In 2010, the date was very early. 2011 is very late.

Plan now to “take up your cross” and follow Jesus by your Lenten worship.

The Power Of One

Our January “Power of One” Stewardship emphasis ends the first weekend of February. As a result of this emphasis, GLC will formulate three ministry task forces to extend and energize our ministry in new areas of Worship, Outreach and Building Relationships. Watch this blog for updates on their brainstorming and implementation during 2011.

Youth Guitar Band Is Ready!

GLC’s youth Guitar Band had it’s first appearance in our Monday evening worship on January 24th. The Guitar Band is the result of our “Free Guitar Lesson” ministry started in 2009. These youth, grades 4-9, enjoy leading worship by using their God-given musical gifts.

Happy Birthday, King James II!

2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the translation of the first major English Bible–the King James Version (a.k.a. KJV). Join us in our Sunday morning Bible classes during February as we celebrate this translation and trace the history of the development of the English Bible, including those who gave up their lives so that we could have God’s authoritative, inspired, and life-giving Word.

“If My People Will Humble Themselves…”

GLC’s 2011 worship theme is based on II Chronicles 7:14. There God gave King Solomon His blessing at the dedication of the Jerusalem temple.

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” NIV

Pray that 2011 will be a year that God’s people receive God’s blessing of grace and healing as they humble themselves and pray.

Jesus, I Am Resting–Website Background Music

The background music for GLCRH.org’s homepage is “Jesus, I Am Resting.” This hymn, written by Jean Pigott in 1876, has remarkable lyrics. Used in our worship, this song is characteristic of our Christ-centered, grace-energized ministry.

Jesus, I am resting, resting,
In the joy of what Thou art;
I am finding out the greatness
Of Thy loving heart.
Thou hast bid me gaze upon Thee,
And Thy beauty fills my soul,
For by Thy transforming power,
Thou hast made me whole.

Refrain: Jesus, I am resting, resting,
In the joy of what Thou art;
I am finding out the greatness
Of Thy loving heart.

O, how great Thy loving kindness,
Vaster, broader than the sea!
O, how marvelous Thy goodness,
Lavished all on me!
Yes, I rest in Thee, Belovèd,
Know what wealth of grace is Thine,
Know Thy certainty of promise,
And have made it mine.

Refrain

Simply trusting Thee, Lord Jesus,
I behold Thee as Thou art,
And Thy love, so pure, so changeless,
Satisfies my heart;
Satisfies its deepest longings,
Meets, supplies its every need,
Compasseth me round with blessings:
Thine is love indeed!

Refrain

Ever lift Thy face upon me
As I work and wait for Thee;
Resting ’neath Thy smile, Lord Jesus,
Earth’s dark shadows flee.
Brightness of my Father’s glory,
Sunshine of my Father’s face,
Keep me ever trusting, resting,
Fill me with Thy grace.

Refrain
